The final project completed at Brown University, which left the playing field open on what exactly we wanted to do. Since I loved Project 1 so much, I decided to do something similar, but make it much more grand and refined. I also wanted it to be presentable as a gift, so instead of making something large, I made something sharable.
It is a mad coincidence that the timing of this final project aligned with my roommate's birthday, which was the weekend before the due date. It is also a coincidence that he mentioned to me that he found this plaque on Amazon with a custom Spotify Code he really likes because I was planning to do something with music anyway. So, in a mad collision of worlds, I decided to kill two birds with one stone, which turned out to be much more wholesome than the violent idiom suggests. In a world of mad coincidences, here is yet another: I had already done a project involving music earlier this year. Another coincidence: I am a music concentrator (I think it’s safe to say that there are really no coincidences, but rather these were ingredients that stirred the pot of the final creation). And so, when all of these loose pieces were found, collected, and combined, I decided to make something that is cohesive of the situation at hand, as well as my personal interests and desire to explore what could come of this.
How It Was Made: A walkthrough of the creation of this project.
Earlier this semester, I created a project by listening in the darkness to a song I found was quite “vibey”. I created 4 separate panels of drawings, but the drawers were simply products of the mood that I was feeling. Wherever the music took me, I was obligated to follow. This time, I wanted to create something just as impulsive, but also a bit more polished. And, I wanted to dedicate it to my friend. So I asked him what his favorite song was, which turned out to be 0X1=LOVESONG by TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and thus was the selected song for the project. He loves K-pop music and owns lots of CD albums, even though almost no one uses CDs anymore. He informed me that he buys them not for the CDs, but for the art and photos that come with them. He actually just listens to the songs on Spotify. I decided to play on this also. So, as I listened to the song (on loop by the way, and the song was stuck in my head for days after), I drew line art on the front cover of the shape of a disk in Illustrator. On the back, I vectorized the Spotify Code of the song and placed it on the back. Then, I printed out the album cover, looked up how to fold an origami CD cover out of paper, and voila! A perfect birthday gift/visa project.
